"Gravitas": The Human Figure in Clay

If Xuaca No. 1 embodies the spirit in the initial stage after death then sculptures “Xuaca No. 3” (below on left) and “Xuaca No. 4” (below in middle) embody the spirit in the transitional stage between the time of death and the emergence of the spirit in the afterlife.

Sculpture “Xuaca No. 2” (below on right) is the most alive and animated of the four “Xuacas”. It is in the final stage of re-birth into the spirit world. From lifeless, organic materials the figure starts to breathe with life and unfolds her arms and legs in order to rise.
