The Human Figure

Barbara J. Phelps explores the human figure in several ways. She explores the human figure as a sculptural form and expresses the power of the human gesture. She also explores the life-sized human form as a symbol of life and of death and the place in-between. She has explored the human form as a sign for the viewer to react to – as a mere presence that exerts a powerful psychological force on us as we stand near to it. In all these approaches the act of sculpting itself is a visceral expression of her passion and obsession.

The artist has studied the figure for many years through drawing on paper and modeling in clay and decided to cast sculptures in bronze through the lost-wax casting process. She poured these pieces directly in bronze without intermediate molds and will never be reproduced. These unique pieces are truly one-of-a-kind.
